What is yoga?

Patañjali (an ancient Indian scholar) defines yoga as the containment of the movements of the mind, a tool for refining the mind. He offers a systematic methodology of working with the body, the breath and the mind to nurture physical health and mental stability.

Body – Āsana

Yoga works with the body through āsana (yoga postures). Through the practice of āsana the body becomes steadier, healthier and lighter.

Breath – Prāṇāyāma

Yoga works with the energy of the body, through the practice of conscious seated breathing (prāṇāyāma). Prāṇāyāma improves mental clarity and brings stability to the mind.

Mind – Dhyāna

Through the practice of āsana and prāṇāyāma mental focus and concentration increase. The mind becomes calm. In time a deeper awareness and understanding of ourselves shines forth.
